Bariatric Surgery?

Surgery for weight loss is called bariatric surgery. During bariatric procedures changes are made to your digestive system to help you lose weight. Some procedures limit how much you can eat, other procedures also reduce absorption of nutrient. Bariatric surgery (or weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery). Many studies have shown that bariatric surgery offers the highest chance of successful weight loss for patients with morbid obesity. In addition bariatric surgery results in a significant reduction of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint problems etc etc. It is important to realise that all weight loss operations are a tool to help you lose weight in combination with a diet and lifestyle changes. So, an operation is not the easy way out. It will take motivation, adaption and hard work to achieve your weight-goals.
